Letter to Mr. President NGOs The Honorable President George Bush 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue Washington, DC April 10, 2005 Mr. President: When you addressed Qinghua student body in Beijing, your speech was censored by your host, the Communist Chinese government (CCG). You may not know that the independent Chinese-American broadcaster, New Tang Dynasty TV, NTDTV, broadcasted your inauguration speech, as well as all three presidential debates with simultaneous translation in Chinese. These historic testimonials were broadcast live, uncensored and viewable in North America, Europe, Australia, Asia, and yes China for the first time in history ever! Now NTDTV's Asia (China) broadcast faces extinction, and your prompt intervention is urgently needed. In May of last year, NTDTV in cooperation with Eutelsat, the Paris based European satellite company, launched the first uncensored, non-government satellite Chinese language TV broadcast to China, reaching the tens of millions of private satellite TV receivers across the country. Within one month, the CCG Ministry of Information demanded that Eutelsat terminate NTDTV's Asia broadcast. In December, Eutelsat signed a "historic partnership agreement" with the CCG Ministry of Information. The same month, NTDTV received non-renewal notice of its contract on Asia broadcast. Eutelsat, despite all the pleas and appeals from Europe, Asia, mainland China and the U.S., is still refusing to continue NTDTV's Asia broadcast service. On April 15th, the "open satellite window" for NTDTV's Asia broadcast will be slammed shut. It comes as no surprise that the CCG has been hostile and vindictive to NTDTV, continuously interfering with NTDTV's business operation and coercively pressuring NTDTV's business partners. The Eutelsat story is just the latest transgression. What does surprise us is why CCG's illicit, terrorist-like tactics have gone unchecked in the democratic world. Mr. President, democracy needs you help, freedom needs your help. Chinese people's right to free information needs your help. You have strongly supported freedom and democracy around the world. You have also said so clearly, there can be no freedom without freedom of information. We know and believe this deeply, and we earnestly appeal to you, support NTDTV to defend democracy, protect free flow of information to counter repression. We understand that Eutelsat is the largest contractor of U.S. government satellite service. As tax payers, we ask you to use all U.S. government leverages with Eutelsat to keep NTDTV's Asia broadcasting. Make it plainly clear to the Chinese and all other repressors that democracy and human rights are still, and will always be the unwavering principles of the democratic world that can not be bought.
