National Mall betw 3rd St. & Capitol Reflecting Pool, Washington DC

Mr. Zhao Ziyang, former General Secretary of the Communist Party in China, contributed mightily to China's move towards economic reform, free markets, political reform, democracy, and the rule of law. However, as the head of China, Mr. Zhao refused to join in the decision to shoot students and Chinese people during the 1989 student-led, pro-democracy uprising at Tiananmen Square. Consequently, he was stripped of his leadership posts, and lived under house arrest during the past 16 years, leading up to his death on the 17th of this month.

Now, a critical mass rally will be held in Washington, DC, this Saturday afternoon (Jan. 29, 2005), from 1-4pm, on the National Mall between 3rd Street and the Capitol Reflecting Pool. The gathering is to mourn and commemorate Mr. Zhao and all that he stood for, and to urge that the Chinese government render a just appraisal of his achievements. His death provides a wake up call to all Chinese people, especially Chinese Communist Party (CCP) members, to come around to seeing the brutality and evil nature of the CCP, and to strive to overcome its control and to renounce membership in it, and to change and work together with the pro-democracy forces -- establishing a free China where there is no fear of persecution, rather instead with justice and human rights for all.

Saturday's event will be comprised of hundreds of concerned groups--the Chinese overseas community, including pro-democracy and human rights groups, minority groups of China, Western observers, and "mainstream" Chinese, from most major cities in North America, Australia, Europe, and Asia, including Hong Kong and Taiwan. Chinese community leaders, former aides to Zhao Ziyang, student leaders from Tiananmen Square, minority representatives, scholars, and celebrities will give short speeches at the Rally. Letters of condolence and statements from all over the world will be read. The crowd gathered in D.C., and group members world wide, will pay a fond remembrance to Zhao Ziyang, and vow to say "good riddance" to the CCP.
